Designed to Protect Against Large Medical Expense
The primary purpose of short-term health insurance is to provide protection in the event of catastrophic medical expense, such as occur with hospitalizations and surgeries. Short-term health insurance plans are not designed to provide the the generous "extras" provided by many permanent health insurance plans -- such as physician office visit co-pay benefits, prescription drug cards and coverage for routine medical examinations. Short-term coverage benefits are not payable until a covered person has fully satisfied the deductible, which range from $250 to $2500.
