Birth Control

In the state of Illinois, Groups, and HMO's must pay for contraceptive devices and services.  This does not apply to individual health programs for the self employed or those unable to qualify for Group Illinois health insurance.

So the guideline is if you have individual health insurance in Illinois you will be paying for your birth control pills. Most companies do offer a discount at the pharmacy so be sure to show your medical ID card to the pharmacist so you do recieve that discount.

Please keep in mind that Maternity is also not automatically covered for individual and families unless they are in a group either.

You may qualify for a program from the state of Illinois that will pay all your birth control costs.

The Illinois Healthy Women Program pays for birth control, physical exams and lab tests women need to plan their pregnancies. It is a great supplement to your Illinois Health Insurance program.

You are eligible for Illinois Healthy Women if:

  • You have lost regular medical benefits from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS),
  • You are at least 19 and no older than 44,
  • You are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a Social Security number, and
  • You live in Illinois.
